The Amish and the Placenta Revolution

Living in Lancaster County is synonymous with the Amish. I get asked often from doulas all over the world if I work with them.

The Amish community is shrouded in mystery because they choose to shy away from anyone who is “English”, AKA not Amish. Because of this, it can be a difficult community to reach. Lancaster Doulas LLC has been blessed to have been welcomed into this community to serve them.

My family has roots in the plain community (Amish and Mennonite) and I was lucky enough to have spent my early childhood on a farm. It has given me a respect and understanding of their culture that many english people do not possess.

In reality, Amish families are just like yours and mine. They play games and chase their children. They sit around the table drinking coffee with their friends. They have parties and play dates and date nights with their husbands. This is the community that I love.

Amish families care deeply about the earth. They believe that God has charged them with care taking of His beloved planet. This is why you will see them spending endless hours tilling and planting the soil. It is a spiritual task for them. It is because of this deep love for the earth, they use its resources in abundance. It makes perfect sense then that placenta encapsulation would be a perfect fit for them.

I get a special satisfaction when doing placenta encapsulation with our Amish clients. The house is always a bustle with helpers cleaning up, taking care of older children, and preparing a bounty of home cooked meals. It feels like home; it is warm and inviting.

Our Amish clients are always excited about the encapsulation process and I usually have someone looking over my shoulder and asking questions. It is a really fun and interactive environment. They love that we offer the services in their homes so they can protect their microbiome. They can witness the process for themselves and they can be sure their placenta is their own.

I am so happy that we get the rare privilege to work with this elusive and secretive community while providing a much needed service at the same time!
